Packt Publishing has released the most recent installment in their popular Drupal Themes series of titles: Drupal 7 Themes. The new book, from author Ric Shreves, updates and expands up on the Drupal 6 edition.

The new edition differs from previous efforts in several regards. In addition to updating the content to reflect the changes in the theming layer in Drupal 7, the author has shifted focus to emphasize the use of sub-themes in theme customization and in the creation of new themes. “Sub-theming is one of the most powerful tools themers possess and proficiency with this tool unlocks the presentation layer in Drupal,” states the author. “When you combine sub-theming with the ability to intercept and override templates, styles and themable functions, there’s literally nothing you can’t do.” The book has also been re-organized with new chapters focused on solutions to common issues faced in theming and another dedicated to useful tools and modules that can assist with theming. “We also stepped away from lengthy code excerpts in favor of more narrow snippets focused on demonstrating specific techniques,” added Shreves.

Este mes de noviembre se llevó a cabo el Seminario TransCyberiano en Costa Rica, los días 3, 4 y 5.

Un evento realmente enriquecedor, orientado a emprendedores. Aunque esta no es una crónica del evento, quisiera decir que salí muy satisfecho de la profundidad y nivel de las ponencias. Hubo mucha oportunidad de charlar con colegas y amigos.

Tuve también, el agrado de participar como expositor, donde pude hablar sobre las tendencias tecnológicas, y la oportunidad que podemos tener como emprendedores con dichas tecnologías. También analizamos la posibilidad de utilizar un CMS como Drupal para emprender en la web y aprovechar muchas de esas tecnologías.

A inicio de este año, Microsoft lanzó “Web Platform Installer” (Web PI), una pequeña pero completa suite para software web en Windows. Esta suite ofrece IIS con varias extensiones como SQL Server, ASP.NET, y PHP, así como una amplia gama de aplicaciones y herramientas web ‘libres’.

Microsoft ha venido realizando algunos esfuerzos, no sólo para incluir el soporte para PHP en sus productos, sino para mejorar el rendimiento de éste bajo IIS. Esto se hace patente con la nueva extensión caché de Windows para PHP. Es sorprendente ver también, que en la sección del instalador de aplicaciones web, se incluyen Drupal, y Wordpress.

Este artículo está dividido en dos partes. En la primera parte me propongo dar un breve vistazo a Web PI: cómo descargarlo, instalarlo y alguna descripción de sus secciones. En el segundo artículo mostraré cómo instalar Drupal con Web PI sobre Windows 7.

Espero que este artículo sirva para mostrar el alcance de Web PI, y cómo puede facilitar la puesta en marcha de un entorno de desarrollo en Windows.
